"With the victory at The International 2014 and bagging the Aegis of the Champions, Newbee won a hefty prize money of $5 million, which implies everyone of the roster is now a Millionaire. But the question is how much did they actually bring back home.
According to Newbee CEO, CuZn, a whooping 30% taxesion is charged by the US government. Another 10% will be given to the Newbee organization itself, while the rest will be split between the five players. Then again the general Chinese Income Tax Policies apply on each one of them.
In total, it comes up to be about $633,567 per person (without income tax), which is noticeably smaller (63.35%) than the original perception of each player receiving over $1 million. Although if it is compared to the average annual income in China of only $8,070, the amount is still considerably high.
And to those who think whats with such high tax deduction, following are some of the details :
The International 2011 took place in Cologne, Germany, so The Champions, Na`Vi, didn’t need to pay taxes. The International 2012 allowed for tax reductions via an individual or organization’s Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) which ended up reducing the original tax of 30% to 10%. The International 2013 champions, Alliance, from Sweden, who have naturally high tax rates, ended up receiving only $60,000 each.
This year, the abnormally high taxation was due to the unlucky timing. As on July 1 this year, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) applied a new rule to foreign financial institutions which requires them to disclose their details, failing to do so will be subject to 30% withdrawal on their US investment when they are cashed in.
In the end, Newbee simply decided to pay instead of revealing their financial information. Taxes is not a fun stuff."
