This post will contain some of the common issues. Please use this thread to discuss listed issues or help add to it.

Patching

1. You receive the following error while patching: "This update requires wow.exe v3.0.9.9551. You have an older version 0.1.0.9626."

This issue will happen if your system registry got the PTR and WOW folders confused. Try right-clicking your game shortcut and run it as an administrator. The Launcher should have access to update your registry key when you do this.

This issue will happen if your system registry does not have the location to your World of Warcraft folder. Try right-clicking your game shortcut and run it as an administrator. The Launcher should have access to update your registry key when you do this.

This error happens when a System Restore or a backup program restored some old files on the game and it gets confused. Please delete the World of Warcraft folder and reinstall the game. You can also try reverting the game if you want but future patches may run into errors. To revert the game, go to your World of WarcraftData folder and delete the patch.MPQ file. If you have a patch-2.MPQ file, delete that as well. Go back to the World of Warcraft folder and run the repair utility.

It won't always be a Northrend map file. It could be Azeroth, Kalimdor, Outland or other objects. The main file that the patcher is trying to read from is damaged. The Repair utility may fix it. If it doesn't, a reinstallation will clear it up. If you have the Wrath of the Lich King DVD, you can install the entire game using just that DVD alone.

This message is very similar in nature (it's actually missing instead of being corrupted) and will also be fixed by the above.

Crashes

1. World of Warcraft looks like it is starting up, but immediately closes itself without an error message.

DBFile errors are usually from old or mismatched game files and will happen after running a backup program, or System Restore. Please delete the World of Warcraft folder and reinstall the game. You can also try reverting the game if you want but future patches may run into errors. To revert the game, go to your World of WarcraftData folder and delete the patch.MPQ file. If you have a patch-2.MPQ file, delete that as well. Go back to the World of Warcraft folder and run the repair utility.
Keep in mind that if you have the Wrath of the Lich King DVD, that can be used to reinstall the entire game from scratch.



Display issues

1. Your character appears mostly black. Shoulders, helms, weapons, and cape are excluded from being black.

This issue seems to be from a new system that we put in place. To disable it, add this to your config.wtf file:
SET componentCompress "0"

You can also enter this command in your chat to set it:

	/console componentCompress 0

	

Hit enter, then restart the game.

In-game settings

16 bit color and depth options were removed from the game. These were available as troubleshooting options to see if a video card was damaged. Some people were using these to push very low-end video cards to perform faster. If you need the option, try making a macro with the following text:

	/console gxcolorbits 16 

	/console gxdepthbits 16 

	/console restart

	

Pushing that macro will set the game to use 16 bit color and 16 bit depth.

Go into your install folder.

Right-click Wow.exe and select Properties.

Under the Compatibility tab go to Input Settings and select "Turn off advanced text services for this program."

(This is on XP)

Click on properties - Compatibility Tab

Under Compatibility Mode - check the box for

"Run this Program in Compatibility Mode for"

Then set it to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
