Liverpool's record-breaking Champions League defeat of Besiktas last month is reportedly among the games UEFA are scrutinising over claims of match-fixing.

The governing body are said to have been alerted by a rush of big-money bets placed shortly before kick-off on a heavy loss for the Turkish side, who were subsequently thumped 8-0.

Liverpool have not yet been contacted by UEFA regarding the situation and last night officials at Anfield said they could not comment because they had no knowledge of any controversy.

UEFA have handed police a list of 15 matches it suspects may have been fixed, which include fixtures in the Champions League, UEFA Cup and InterToto Cup.

Liverpool's 8-0 thrashing of Besiktas has been linked to the investigation as part of a match-fixing probe.

The Daily Mail says there are reports that the 8-0 Champions League win over Besiktas last month is considered suspicious because of irregular betting patterns. UEFA officials refused to confirm or deny the allegations.

One look at Liverpool's group is enough to raise concern.

Besiktas have a goal difference of minus nine - compared to Liverpool's of plus nine - but go into next week's final game against Porto still able to qualify ahead of the 2005 champions.

After losing 8-0 at Anfield on November 6, with Yossi Benayoun scoring a hat trick, players and staff from the Turkish club said how 'ashamed' they were.

Investigators for Sueddeutsche Zeitung, a Munich daily, claim that there was 'frenzied betting on a high-score victory' prior to the game. UEFA have made no contact with Liverpool and last night officials at Anfield said they could not comment because they had no knowledge of any controversy.

But reports in Germany suggest that Besiktas players, on a fraction of the salaries earned by Liverpool stars, could have been targeted by Asian betting syndicates.

"At this stage I can neither confirm nor deny the reports," UEFA chief William Gaillard told the Daily Mail. "There has to be a certain amount of confidentiality with these things because we could risk a source of information drying up."

Technically, this is Champions League news, and not UEFA Cup, but I’m trying to stay on top of the developments on this, so what the hell …

Anyway, looks like the UEFA matches being investigated for suspicion of match fixing might not just be early qualifiers between low-ranking Eastern European countries. According to ESPN, the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung has claimed that there was an unusually high amount of pre-match betting for a “large victory” just before Liverpool kicked off against Besiktas in their second group stage match. That would be the match in which Liverpool set the Champions League record with an 8-0 seal-clubbing of the Turkish side. The paper reports that some players on Besiktas may have been targeted by those apparently rich and well-connected Asian betting syndicates we’ve been hearing so much about.

This changes the scandal quite a bit, if it may have affected the group stage, and some of the major players. That group is so close right now that any sort of implications of cheating could blow it up entirely. Since Besiktas still has a chance to qualify for the knockouts, we now have a scandal that could affect one of the last 16 clubs in the Champions League. Yikes. I’ll try to keep on this as much as I can.
