Kiryu no Sato

Kiryu no Sato means the village where a heavy fog often occurs. The location was the borderline of Ise, in the western part of Mie Prefecture. Generally speaking, any place in Iga has a lot of fog. The fog provided easy cover to hide. One of the most important Iga Ninjutsu tactics was to hide from their enemies. Akuto, a Ninja during the early times, acted fiercely in this area in 1282 according to the Todai-ji Temple Documents. In the age of Japan's civil wars (1467-1603), Iga Ninjas built their castles mostly on mountainsides, like Kiryu, Moroki, Taneo and Takaon (now they belong to Aoyama area). They fought against Oda's forces bravely in Tensyo Iga no Ran in 1581. Their main Ninja group was the Kitabatake families which Oda's forces destroyed in the previous year.

Takao

It is said that the legend of Chikata General began in the southern part of Iga. It is about "Fujiwara Chikata." According to the Taiheiki (a feudal army story), in Heian period (782-1185), Chikata resisted the government by using 4 Onis (a Japanese traditional monster, similar to Demon). Their names were, Kinki (the Gold Demon) who had a body of gold, which he used to render his enemies arrows useless. Fu-ki (the Wind Demon) who can control the tremendous wind, which he used to destroy castles. Suiki (the Water Demon) who can control the water, which he used to push down his enemies. And Ongyoki (the Stealth Demon) who was good at hiding himself, which he used to deftly break into castles. Their attacking method was thought to be based on Ninjutsu. They say the Demons were the origin of Iga Ninjas. Yet, Kino Tomoo went to battle them, and after he read the waka (Japanese old type of song) to them, they surrendered.

Way of the Survive-2-

A Ninja`s costume is known as " Ninniku Yoroi" -Ninniku Armor-. Ninniku literally means `forbearance` and also refers to a Buddhist monk`s robes. Spirit of the Ninja is thus based on the principle of bearing insults and swallowing the desire for revenge. In other words, the fundamantel rule of the Ninja when faced with an enemy`s attack is evade it naturally and disappear, using Ninpou Taijutsu (concealment skills somtimes referred to as Tongyou no Jutsu). Only when no other option is left open would a Ninja make us of natural principles and methods to fell his opponent.

Ninja did not value survival because of a fear of death they Exercised endurance throughout their secretive lives in order to protect their families, their clans, and their country. Their harsh training endowed them with a though but pliant spirit and taijutsu skills suitable for comping with any situation, together with a sense of awareness that had universal appliacation. Ninjutsu is the ultimate taijutsu; Ninja shows no intention to fight, and perserveres not with some "noble cause" but simply with the spirit of enduring the cruelties of both life and death. His life is a solitary path, bound on either side, as if in a cycle of death and rebirth, by the act of Isshi Soden (transmission to a sole disciple). His aim is to attain the enlightenment described by the first words of the Buddha: Yuiga Dokuson, "Alone in the world. I am exalted. "

Ninja History -1-

The history of the Ninja is long and ancient. Some say it extends back for over 2500 years, but in fact there are records going back as far as 4300 years. It would be fair to say that it has been around ever since homo sapiens first appeared. The oroginal Shinobi no Mono (disguise art) would have developed a wide variety of Shinobi arts using stones, sticks, vines and the like. Old stories say that they played an important role as ` behind- the - scenes ` forces in Okume no Mikoto`s natioin-building operations and Emperor Jimmu`s subjugation of Yamato, which legends place at around 600 BC. Some old documents also state that Price Shoutoku (574-622) used Shinobi no Mono.

This venerable Japanese art of Ninjutsu was also subject to influence from overseas. Even today, the Ninpou Taijutsu legacy includes techniques called Senban- nage (throwing of thin iron plates) and Hichou- jutsu ( misunderstood by many to mean ` leaping techniques` although it actually refers to ways of neutralizing the oppenent`s own techniques.) These are part of the Gyokko school of Kosshi-jutsu and the Kotou School of Kppou- jutsu, which were apparently brought to Japan from China by Kenzou who was sailor man. He was captured in China land and he was becoming a slave. And then he was running away his cell. And then he hid in Mountains and learn Zen religion and Zen Priest`s defence techniques. And he was going back Japans again and he was living on Mountain. And they called him Tengu. And he invented first Ninpou-taijutsu.

According to the Denshou (written records) of the TOgakure School, the Togakure style of Ninjutsu was founded by Togakure Daisuke. In 1181, Taira forces set out with tens of thousands of troops in order to subdue Kiso Yoshinaka (1154-84), who had raised an army to overthrow their grip on power. Yoshinaka aimed to intercept them, and commanded his whole army from a cave overlooking the Susobana river, which flows through the Togakure (now called Togakushi) mountains. THe place where Yoshinaka stationed his troops and raised the battle cry is known even now as Lord Kiso`s Cave. Yoshinaka`s forces included a sixteen-year-old vassal named Shima Kosanta Minamoto no Kanesada, who was said to have undergone austere training in the Togakure area and to have mastered Senban- nage and Hichou- jutsu along with similar techniques peculiar to Shugendou, the mountain asceitcism which was now spreading throughout the country. Incidentally Takamtasu Sensei alsi practiced Shundeou at its most imporant site, the Mumano mountains , and became its head the " Top Tengu ". (T.Daisuke educated by Kenzou the Tengu.)

By 1184, Yoshinaka`s luck had run out and he died in battle. Kanesada had mean while been wounded in many places as he cut his way through, 3.000 horsemen under Fujiwara Hidehira, and had collapsed from his severe injuries. He was rescued by a Taoist sage known by the epithet Kasumi-gakure- " Hiding in the mist " and escaped with him to the mountains of Iga. In time the sage accepted him as his student and trained him in the martial ways of Ninpou-taijutsu. Shima Kosanto Minamoto no Kanesada later changed his name to Togakure Daisuke, and established Togakure-ryu as a new style of Ninjutsu in the Iga area.

It is the way of the world that winners do not cease attacking until they have wiped out their opponents and secured their newly gained position, while the exhausted losers try to escape by heading out into the mountains, far from human habitation. In this way, Fujiwara fugitives, as well as the warriors defeated during the Taira- Minamoto conflict, and later those from the Nothern-Southern courts (1336-92), sought refuge in places such as Iga or Kouga (Koka,Koga), and established themselves as rural Samurai. However, they were hunted down rigorously, and these rural Samurai found themselves obliged to create and refine Tongyou (evasion) techniques, so that they and their families could escape and survive. It is their research which, systematically enchanced over time, gave birth to Ninjutsu, Ninpou Taijutsu.

On the other hand, the proximity of these rural Samurai to Kyoto(Kyouto) meant that they were ideally placed to be `early adopters` of the newly imported scicence of explosives, which they combined with home-grown Ninja tolls. They were also exposed to foreign philosophies such as Qimen- Dunja ( directional divination related to Reiki and Feng Shui), which enetered Japan via the " three roads "- the two overland Silk Roads and the marine Silk Road. If the occasion arose, they would enter the field and exert themselves on the side of Justice, for example by gathering troops loyal to the Imperial Court.

Ninja History -2-

Scholars put forth all sorts of theories- that there were seventy-plus schools, seventy-five schools, 103 schools, and so on. Nobody really knows the true number. In any case, if one did know the truth about Ninpou Taijutsu it would no longer be true Ninpou taijutsu. Samurai soap operas on Japanese television often feature the " Shadow Yagyu" warriors, despite the fact that there is apparently no basis for them in historical records. Nevertheless, The Yagyu Shinkage sword school founded by Yagyu Sekihusai Muneyoshi (1529-1606) was situated in Iga, so it would seem foolish to deny the posibility entirely.

The Muromachi (1392-1568) and Edo (1600-1868) periods saw the rise and fall of numerous feudal domains. It is generally believed that each domain would have had at least a few Ninja. Even if there were no Ninja per se, spying and strategy would have been carried out under the command of Bushi or the like ( in Edo period Bushi had the highest status in the warrior-farmer-artisan-merchant social hieararchy). There would also have been special, unconventional organizations whose existence must not be overlooked. The nature of these Ninja or Bushi would change depending on the period, circumstances, and attitudes. It is easy to picture these Ninja blending into their surroundings, surviving as well as they could within the constraints of the Shinobi no Mono lifestyle.

Ninja History -3-

Ninja started with the Ninja Hachimon. Over time however, this changed so that greater weight was placed on HAppou Hiken. The Shinobi Happou Hiken consist of following;

1- Taijutsu, Hichou- Jutsu, Nawa-nage (Body skills and rope throwing)
2- Karate Koppou Taijutsu, Jutaijutsu (unarmed fighting)
3- Sou-Jutsu, Naginata-jutsu (spear and halberd arts)
4- Bou-Jutsu, Jou-Jutsu, Hanbou- Jutsu (staff and stick arts)
5- Senban-nage, Ken- nage Jutsu, Shuriken (throwing of blades )
6- Ka-Jutsu, Sui-Jutsu ( use of fire and water )
7- Chikujou Gunryaku Hyohou (strategy and tactics)
8- Onshin- jutsu ( concealmant)

The branches listed above were known as the Hapoou ( eight methods), and were supplemented by Hiken- Jutsu ( secret sword arts), in other words, The Shinobi sword Kodachi ( short sword), Jutte ( truncheon ) and Tessen ( metal fan ) to complete the Ninja Happou Hiken.

In the later periods the term Togakure- ryu Juhakkei ( eighteen forms ) was also used. The eighteen forms of the ninja were defined as " Spiritual education, Koppu-jutsu body skills, swordwork, stickwork, Shuriken, Kusari-gama ( sickle and chain ), spear, halberd, horsemanship, water training, explosives, strategy, espionage, infiltration, concealment, disguise, and climatic and environmental knowledge." These were obliterated by-or rather concealed within- the Bugei Juhappan ( eighteen types of conventional Ninpou arts) thereby escaping through transformation into thirty-six forms: discretion became better part of valor. In a sense, they evolved into the thirty-six Togakure strategies, the Kuji of the Santou Tonkou techniques, and even the Juji principle of bonding with the divine. Infact, Ninja did not simply learn all forms of Ninpou arts through their training they contiuned studying until they reached a level far beyond mere technical prowess.

Bansenshukai -Ninja History-4-

The Bansenshukai was a book of ninpou taijutsu secrets written by Fujibayashi Yasutake in 1676 to preserve all that was then known about ninja culture. With the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate came stabilization, and so ninja became outdated and gradually disappeared from the pages of history.

With the change of the times, the art of ninjutsu were naturally headed toward extinction. Bansenshukai means "many streams make a sea ", referring to the 49 schools of Iga family and Koga familys`s Ninpou taijutsu ryu were written down. The Bansenshukai first emphazises the ethics of shoshin. Shoshin literally means " right mind " It warns: Wheh ninjutsu is used, always maintain right mind and think with flexibility.
It is out of morality and self interest that ninjutsu is employed. If a ninja has wicked heart, he is merely common thief.

Ninjutsu contains many kuden or oral instructions, so one can not everything about ninja arts by simply reading copy of the Banshenshukai was made by Ohara Kazuma. a represantive of the Koga Samurai, and others, and presented to the Shogunate in 1789. It was kept in the National Cabinet Library until Showa 30 to prevent from being missued, and ordinary citizens were not permitted to view it.

Poem by Yoshimori

Isenosaburo Yoshimori, purpotedly for Iga Family or Ueno Family, was a General at the beginning of the Kamakura period, yet some conjecture that he was a bandit as well. Yoshimori met
Minamotono Yoshitsune in Ueno by chance and became his vassal. Yoshimori served with distinction in the Dannoura War. Although he helped Yoshitsune escape from Kyoto. Yoshimori was captured and killed, and his head exhibited in public. There is a collection of 100 tanka poems called the Yoshimori Shinobiuta. The content of these poems contains secret of ninjutsu, and some of the tanka are even quoted in other famous books of ninjutsu such as the Bansenshukai.

For ninja who don`t think falsehood is shameful, they can outwit an enemy.

Ninja must know when enemy tires and becomes careless.

A ninja must practice three points, theory, fearlessness and strategy.

Ninja must practice escaping more than invading.

Enjuin

At the entrance of Akame, the area with forty-eight waterfalls, it is said that En no Gyoja founded Enjyu-in temple. It used to be called Obaku-ji, During training there, a gyoja saw Fudomyo (the God fighting the Devil )riding a cow whose eyes. Afterward the gyoja worshiped Fudomyo as his God. It was also the temple of the Ninjas in the southern area of Iga. It was very popular among gyojas or Ninjas. In the Kamakura period (1192-1333), Todai-ji temple's power was so great that Enjyuin had to belong to the Todai-ji as a branch temple. Yet, Kuroda no Akutou got angry and decided to fight Todai-ji. They asked for the strongest Akuto, his name was Kinobei Moritoshi, and he belonged to the Ooe familiy. They resisted very hard, and at last they reget the Enjuin. Unfortunately, 200 years later, the Enjuin was almost broken down with fire by Oda's forces.

Nachake Dayu

In the north of the Nabari basin, there was the Natsuaki village. The villagers called it "Natsuchake" for short. Natsuchake came from Natsuyake. According to the Todai-ji temple documents, the most famous Kuroda no Akuto, Ooe Sadafusa's, nickname was Natsuyaki Hyoube-i. It is said that Kuroda no Akutou were the origin of Ninjas. In 1113, Natsuyakedayu and his group fearlessly stole the treatures from the Empero's treasure stock. Generally, it was thought that no one could steal the Emperor's treasure from the stock, but Nachakedayu did. He trained his military group systematically, and he could fight the Emperas' military. He had great confidence in his group. They seemed to be Ninjas. Finally, Nachakedayu and his group were killed by Kebiishi. (the govermental police in Kyoto during Heian period 794-1192).

Shimagahara-tou

Shimagahara-tou was the Iga Nija group in Shimagahara area. Their main concern was the Todai-ji temple in Yamato (now in Nara city). Shimagahara was near the top of the Kizu river. From Shimagahara, many woods were carried to Todai-ji temple as the tax. In 1331, a battle broke out in Kasagi between the South Emperor's forces and the North forces near Shimagahara area. Shimagahara-tou participated in the battle with the South, Godaigo Emperor's side. They fought for the Emperor as hard as possible and the Emperor was delighted and gave them a flag with chrysanthemum design and a sword as a token of appreciation, These treasures have been the symbol of the Shimagahara-tou. In the battle of Tensho Iga no Ran, they surrendered in order not to have the Shogatsu-dou, (also caled Kanbodaiji, their simbolized temple), burnt. After the death of Oda Nobunaga, they resisted Oda's force with every effort.
Shimagahara

Shimagahara is in the north-western area of Iga. The origin of the name is said to be from an island surrounded by the mountains. Shimagahara Gyoja-dou is along the Kizu river in Shimagahara. The En no Gyoja statue has been placed for a long time in a nearby rock cave. One of the Iga Ninja's tactics was like guerrila in the mountains. So, it means that Ninjas seemed to be involved with Syugendou, a religionus order which prescribes ascetic practices in mountains, in order to attain magic powers beneficial to the communitiy, Shugen believers have thought of En no Gyoja as their God. Some Shugen believers became Ninjas to suvive. Then, some Ninjas believed En no Gyoja. Kasagiyama near Shimahara in the suthern part of Kyoto was the training place of Shugen, so Shimagahara-tou had much to do with Kasagiyama.

Sugitani-jinja

The Sugitani-jinja shrine is for the Ooe families, who were the strongest group of Akuto, the origin of Ninja. They rebelled against Todai-ji temple, the most powerful temple in Japan during the Kamakura period (1192-1333). Their ways of fighting against Todai-ji temple was like guerilla warfare. They had fought when Todai-ji had almost no power to control them. After the battle between Akuto and Todai-ji, some Akutou turned into Ninjas. Mibuno-jo

In the battle of Tensho Iga no Ran, at Mibuno-jo castle, many Ninjas in Mibuno (now Iga-area) gathered and fought Oda's forces. They were from Kawahigashi, Kawanishi, Nishinosawa, Midai, Sindo, Aita, and Yabata. According to the Iranki (the story about Tensho Iga Ran by Kikuoka Nyogen), Mibuno-jo had the equipment to drop large stones. Takigawa Kazumasu, the Oda's general, who used to be a Koka Ninja, attacted Mibuno castle. The Ninjas' leader, Nakabayashi Tango, commanded all Ninjas to fight fiercely. Oda's forces had a tremendous amount of soldiers and weapons. Finally, the Iga Ninjas ran away to Mt.Reizan, the highest mountain in Iga, but it is said that Oda's forces never gave up killing the Iga Ninjas and chased persistently in order to cut off their heads. At the result many Ninjas were killed.
