Zuko begins his teaching and loses his firebending power. So Aang and Zuko go out to find the origin of firebending. They find ruins of a ancient city where they learn a firebending move called "The Dancing Dragon". They then get caught by sun warriors who take them to two firebending masters where they realise the real meaning of firebending. The masters were dragons who were supposedly extinct (The dragons were the first firebenders ever just like the moles were the first earth benders and sky bison were the first air benders).

Zuko begins teaching Aang firebending, but has lost his power. Toph describes how she learned bending from the Badgermoles prompting Aang to recommend learning bending from the original firebenders. Zuko says that it is impossible because the dragons, the original firebenders, are extinct. Aang and Zuko head to an ancient city which was home to the Sun Warriors over a century ago. Aang questions Zuko about the dragons and it is revealed that his Uncle Iroh killed the last dragon after Firelord Sozin decreed that any who killed a dragon would go down in history and have dragon added to their name, explaining how Iroh gained the name the Dragon of the West. Aang said that he thought Iroh was good to which Zuko replied he has a complicated past, something that seems to run in the family. Here they find ruins of an ancient city where they learn a firebending move called "The Dancing Dragon". They are then captured by Sun Warriors who agree to take them to the two firebending masters. First Aang and Zuko are given a part of the "Immortal Flame"; the first fire that was given to man by the dragons. There are to keep is burning while they climb to the top of the nearby mountain. Aang is hesitant about firebending, but agrees to go. Once they reach the top of the mountain the Sun Warriors call the masters, a blue and red dragon. Aang, Zuko and the two dragons perform the "Dancing Dragon" together and the dragons then judge the two, deeming them worthy. The masters then breathe fire around Zuko and Aang, showing the two the true meaning of firebending. After the dragons return to their cave, Zuko and Aang discuss what they've learned. Zuko realizes that his purpose over the last couple of years had been to capture Aang and now that he joined Aang, he lost sight of his purpose. He now knows that his purpose is to help defeat his father and return balance to the world. Aang realizes that fire is not meant to destroy but that it is energy and life. Aang and Zuko both are able to firebend now. It is also revealed that Iroh did not slay the dragons after visiting the temple and that he too had the true meaning of firebending revealed to him. Iroh lied in order to protect the last of the dragons.
