Scandinavian immigration policy is a rather hard topic to cover due to the large amount of countries residing in Scandinavia with different immigration policies and different mindsets of citizens. That’s why I’m rather going to focus on Sweden for this matter due to the fact that Sweden is the largest of the Nordic countries by size and population.

Sweden’s population is over nine million and this makes Sweden the largest country in the region.Sweden is , however, one of the smallest member countries of the EU which it joined in 1995.By the mid 20th century, Sweden combined its liberal market economy with welfare policies which was run by the state.During the mid 1950’s and 1960’s, Sweden required to recruit immigrant labour to generate a tax base needed for the expansion of the public sector.

A large number of immigrants at that time was coming from Sweden’s neighbours such as Finland and Denmark to find new job opportunities in the largest Scandinavian country. However, the number of Nordic immigrants slowly diminished over the years because neighbouring Nordic countries improved their economies and that made immigration for work rather obsolete among Sweden’s neighbours.

Since the early 1970’s, immigration to Sweden has consisted primarily of refugee migration and asylum seeking from non-European countries especially from the Middle East.In the 1990’s, Sweden accepted a huge number of refugees from Yugoslavia.Nowadays 13-14 percent of Sweden’s population is foreign born and this is undoubtedly causing a quite bit of unrest and xenophobia among the citizens of Sweden due to the fact that people from migrant origin have considerably higher rates of unemployment than native Swedes and those immigrants have been heavily dependent on social welfare benefits. That’s why Sweden had to stop accepting labour immigration from non-European countries.

Historical Background

The modern era of immigration started just before the World War II .There had been a large quantity of Jews fleeing from the Nazi Germany to seek asylum in Sweden but that did not end so well for them because many of those refugees were not accepted into Sweden due to anti-semitism movements and the discriminatory racial ideology which was dominant in Sweden at that time but the most important reason why those refugees were rejected is that the Swedish government did not want a conflict with Nazi Germany at that time.A lot of people from the neighbouring countries fled to Sweden during the war, especially from Denmark and norway which were under Nazi occupation and Finland which was being attacked by the Soviets. They were all accepted and were given work in factories and agriculture to replace Swedish men who were sent to defend the borders of Sweden. At the end of the war, a very large number of survivors from Nazi concentration camps were settled in Sweden and were given jobs. This did not cause any societal problems because labour was in great demand and they were not taking native Swedes’ jobs.

After the war, there was a big influx of labour immigrants from Finland and other neighboring Nordic countries along with Southern European countries to Sweden. These people were granted free entry into the country due to an overwhelming demand of labour force in Sweden at that time. They also received the right to become permament citizens.Joint efforts of the Swedish government and the Swedish Trade Union Confederation created a welcoming environment for those who were recruited by Swedish corporations to immigrate to Sweden for work. They made sure that the foreign workers were to enjoy the same wage levels and rights as Swedes, including access to unemployment benefits. These policies caused the number of migrants to grow rapidly, even those who were not recruited by Swedish corporations wanted to migrate to Sweden to find work and other opportunities. That’s why Sweden had to end labor migration from non-Nordic countries in 1970’s.

From the early 1970’s and to late 1980’s, Sweden had been receiving huge numbers of asylum seekers from the third world countries instead of labour immigration. With the abolishment of labor migration from non-Nordic countries, the only way to become a permament citizen was through asylum seeking and this inevitably led to a high number of refugees from the third world to immigrate to Sweden to reuinite with their families or to find work or to escape from opression.

Many of these people were granted asylum on humanitarian grounds. This allowed the immigration authorities to appease liberal critics who felt that Sweden was not doing enough to live up to its commitments to the UN. By not recognizing these asylum seekers as UN Convention refugees, they did not enjoy the full rights to protection as written in the convention. Instead, Swedish authorities interpreted "humanitarian grounds" without having to follow international conventions. Consequently, the authorities could change their interpretations if necessary.

"Shocking images of the Swedish Minister of Culture carving into a “nigger cake” are sweeping the Internet. The bizarre incident occurred on Saturday in Sweden when Swedish minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth celebrated a tax funded party for the Stockholm cultural elite, aka cultural elitist snobs." said:
