In one of the most astonishing turnarounds we will see at this level of tournament play, Turkey played a brutal first half, went down to two goals by the Czech Republic, and in the last 15 minutes scored three times to win not only the match, but qualification for the second round.

They will however have to play without their goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, sent off for violence.

With so much at stake, a slow and cautious start was perhaps acceptable.

But from the Turks, whose fans whipped up their traditional frenzy before the start in Geneva, that caution was spiked with several stings of cynicism, kicks and thumps into the backs of the Czechs.

Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt, the arbiter who lost the respect of many of us after ruling that Italy's Christian Panucci was "active" while he lay wounded off the field of play in a previous match, did his best to afford some decent protection for the Czech players from the Turks.

Twice inside the opening 10 minutes he showed yellow cards, to Mehmet Topal for a dangerous lunge at the shins of Maret Jankulovski, and to Mehmet Aurelio for barging into the back of Jan Koller with intent to harm. Indeed the same Czech was the victim of another bash into his back moments later, and this time Emre Gungor was merely treated to a Swedish lecture on the rules of Association Football.

All the while, Fatih Terim, the Turkish coach was railing on the sideline. His actions gave the impression that he considered his Turks were challenging legitimately for the ball; either that or the rough tactics were to his orders.

A pity, because when Turks set out to play the game they possess pleasing talents on the ball, and a cunning much better applied to outwitting rather than hitting opponents. It was, presumably, meant to intimidate the Czechs - but why would they pick on Koller?

The man is a colossus, a slow one these days because he is hauling around a 220 pound torso, or 100 kilograms, that, at 35 years of age, has run too many miles to be called nimble. Koller is, however, still a useful target man.

He stands almost 6 feet 8 inches, more than 2 meters. That makes him the tallest man in the tournament, and on 34 minutes height was his weapon when he scored the goal the Czechs fully deserved. The ball was lofted to him from Zdenek Grygera from the right and, shrugging off his marker like a rhino dismissing a pesky fly, Koller braced his neck muscles and directed his header from 9 yards toward goal.

Volkan Demirel must surely have seen it coming, yet this goalkeeper, no midget himself, reached up almost lazily. He got the right hand to the ball, but could only push it beneath his cross bar from where it fell to earth inside the net.

1-0 to the Czechs, and fully deserved by both sides.

The fervor of the Turkish throng was silenced even before that break through, in part because their team was so utterly negative, and in part because though the Czech Republic did play on the front foot, its prolonged spells of patient, probing soccer lacked true inspiration.

These are not the inventive, quick minded, fleet footed Czechs of 2004. The playmakers Pavel Nedved and Karel Poborski have retired from the national team and the coming man Tomas Rosicky is injured. So it is a labored team with the one virtue over the Turks that it fielded in Libor Sionko the one player of consistent forward dynamism.

Turkey became a transformed team after the interval. Where there was caution, there was now attacking pace and purpose. Where there was coarse fouling, there was now a determination to get down the flanks and examine every nerve and sinew of Czech resistance.

Terim made positive substitutions, bringing on Sabri Saroglu for Semih Senturk and then the speedy English-born winger Colim Karim Richards. While the rain was teeming down, the extra pace of the Turks was now turning the tide, but not before the Czechs could and should have been three up.

Koller had missed a sitter, his sluggishness on the ground exposed and his shot wide. Within seconds, however, his embarrassment was erased by Jaroslav Plasil scoring with a splendid low volley though, again, Volkan got his right hand to it and could not stop the goal.

Two up, little more than an hour gone, surely now the Czechs were winners? Not so. Mayhem was breaking. Terim again berated the poor fourth official because he had a man injured and wanted to make a third substitution, when that goal went in.

Once more the Czechs responded, but Jaroslav Plasil hit a post, and only then did the match take its astonishing turn. After 75 minutes, Arda Turan struck a low volley so swift that it deceived Petr Cech along the ground and now we could see the belief in Turkish minds.

After 85 minutes Nihat Kahveci, always capable of predatory goal poaching, preyed on a dreadful piece of mishandling by Cech. The ball was in the goalkeeper's grasp, in both hands, but he let it slip and Nihat gratefully struck.

On 89 minutes the same player Nihat struck the winner, this time vurling his shot with the right foot around the goalkeeper. The Czechs thought Nihat was offside, they were wrong and the ref was right.

The arbiter was also full justified in sending off goalkeeper Volkan for a cave man act of violence, throwing an opponent to ground. Even in victory, the Turks accepted disgrace.
