The town manager of Fort Myers Beach has been fired because his wife is a porn star. And some residents questioned the decision during an emergency Town Council meeting Wednesday night.

I can hardly believe that it will be December tomorrow. It has been one crazy year and I only hope that 2010 brings our world back to a more normal balance.

Most of you know what happened to my husband and me this past July so you can probably understand where I’m coming from. July 21st is a day I will never forget and my husband and I still look back at it as if in a dream.

We had a normal American life, newly married to a highly respected City Manager, living on the beach in Florida and enjoying my time getting to know a new community and the people my husband worked for. Scott and I had spent 8 months really enjoying our new life together and we were in the process of joining our two families together. We are both kind of home bodies so it was taking time for me to get to know people on Fort Myers Beach. Little did I know what was going to happen on the morning of the 4th of July when Scott and I prepared to ride in the local parade.

You need to understand that my husband is a very proud and patriotic man. A vetern and a career city manager (or public servant as he likes to call it). Scott had spent his entire adult life working for the taz payers and doing it with honesty. How can a man like that be fired for being married to me I think now?

After I was recognized by someone in the 4th of July parade and the news came out that I had been involved in the adult industry our world came apart at the seems. Keep in mind that adult films are not against the law and I had essentially retired before scott and I were married. I certainly never brought the adult industry with me to Fort Myers Beach.

On the evening of July 21st the Mayor of Fort Myers Beach called Scott and informed him that his contract had been terminated without cause. I still don’t really understand what that means but never the less, we were now unemployed with three kids in high school. The media went wild when the first headlines read Politian fired for being married to porn star. Our story was on tv and on the front pages of news papers all over the country, yet we had done nothing wrong. We didn’t even get a chance to call family members to explain, they learned on the evening news and it hurt many of them.

My husband would simply say as I cried on his shoulder, hold your head high and remember that we did nothing wrong. I know he must have been deeply hurt after spending an entire career doing good deeds, but he only cared about my feelings and our self respect. “Let them walk in your shoes before they comment on your life” he would say.

During those first few days we received thousands of emails in support of us, and especially in support of the work that scott had done. People were clearly upset and hurt that this could happen in America where our freedoms are something we all fight for.

As scott and I look back we realize that we made some mistakes after the news broke. We were in a reactive mode and under a lot of pressure and stress. Some of the decisions we made than would be made a lot different now. I want to thank so many of you that have been both understanding and supportive during the last 4 months, it really has helped our family.

As a new year approaches and Scott continues to seek a new job we have a lot to be thankful about too. My husband and I have shared something that has brought us even closer together and our love story continues to grow.

Our personal problems are really nothing compared to what so many others have gone through during the last year with our economy so down and people being out of work through no fault of their own (how come the guys that did this to our economy are still so rich?)

Well, it is time to start decorating the house for Christmas so let us all lift our spirts as this year comes to an end and hope for a better year ahead. Enjoy you day and know that you are in my thoughts.
