Telepath. Teacher. Visionary. The planet's most powerful mutant is also its most compassionate leader. In pursuit of his dream for peaceful coexistence between Homo sapiens and Homo superior, Professor Charles Xavier established his School for Gifted Youngsters to help a select class of troubled teenagers hone their strange abilities -- and protect society from those who would use such gifts to rule mankind. Today, as ever, he and his X-Men stand in defense of a world on the brink of genetic war!

Powers: The world's most powerful telepath, Charles Xavier possesses vast psionic abilities. He can induce illusions, temporary mental or physical paralysis, loss of specific memories, or total amnesia; project mind-numbing mental bolts; and sense the presence of mutants within a small radius. Other abilities include telekinesis and astral projection.

Weapons: Professor X designed and constructed the Cerebro system -- a room-sized super-computer capable of detecting mutants over vast areas. Cerebro's range is broader when operated in conjunction with the telepathic ability of Xavier or another mutant.

The world's most powerful telepath, Charles Xavier's crippled body serves as a constant reminder of his troubled past -- one fraught with pain, loss and the bitter sting of oppression. The son of nuclear researcher Brian Xavier and his wife Sharon, Charles experienced the emergence of his telepathic powers while still a boy. Following her husband's accidental death, Sharon married Brian's colleague, Dr. Kurt Marko. Cain, Kurt's son by a previous marriage, came to live at the Xaviers' Westchester mansion shortly thereafter. A cruel and spiteful boy, he bullied his new stepbrother. As punishment, Cain's father beat him -- and the untrained Charles felt his sibling's pain firsthand, as he could not yet control his fledgling abilities or terminate his contact with the boy's mind. As he grew older, Charles learned to rein in his burgeoning powers.

A brilliant student, Charles enrolled in the graduate-studies program at Oxford University, where he met and fell in love with fellow student Moira Kinross. Their passionate discussions on the subject of genetic mutation gave way to an equally passionate romantic relationship, and the two planned to be married. Standing in their way was Moira's former boyfriend, Joe MacTaggert, a lance corporal in the Royal Marines -- and a bully and thug, just like Cain. In Joe's eyes, Charles was an effete, good-for-nothing intellectual. To prove him wrong -- and to validate himself in terms his rival would understand -- Charles enlisted in the military after completing his studies at Oxford.

When Moira broke off their engagement without explanation, Charles left the Army to travel abroad. While in Cairo, Egypt, he clashed with the powerful mutant telepath Amahl Farouk. This experience inspired Charles to devote his life to protecting humanity from misguided mutants bent on world domination and safeguarding innocent mutants from human oppression. Charles next traveled to Israel, where he befriended fellow drifter Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, the mutant who would come to be called Magneto. Their powers revealed to one another while battling terrorists, Charles espoused his optimistic belief that Homo sapiens and Homo superior could coexist, but Erik foresaw mutants as the new minority to be persecuted and hunted because of their differences. Arriving in London, Charles renewed his friendship with Moira, who had since married Joe and was now a renowned geneticist; the two began to discuss the idea of founding a school for mutants. En route to the United States, Charles was involved in an accident that crippled his legs.

Despite his setback, he forged ahead and opened the school. Professor X's first student was 11-year-old Jean Grey, traumatized when she telepathically experienced the emotions of a dying friend. Charles helped Jean recover and taught her to use her telekinetic powers. Following his success with Jean, he embarked on his long-held plan to locate young mutants and enroll them in his School for Gifted Youngsters. Professor X even converted his mansion into a base from which he could train them to use their powers for humanity's benefit. During the months that followed, Charles assembled the balance of his original students. He dubbed them X-Men, because each possessed an "extra" ability normal humans lacked.

For years, Charles was widely regarded as an authority on genetic mutation, as well as an advocate of peaceful relations between man and mutant -- but the gene
