This is a rather odd problem with Outlook 2003. One symptom is blank messages. When a message is opened the body is blank, but it shows who the message came from and the subject. If the source is viewed the message can be read. If I click reply the message can be read (in a different font then the original the message was written in).

With this the problem appears to be MS word. I say this because not all messages are blank. Only messages with a specific font. Oddly I fixed that today by going to Microsoft update and getting Office XP (yes office XP) SP3. Strangely this fixed the problem mentioned above, but the SP doesn't show up in the "About Microsoft outlook" (still shows SP2) and the SP still shows up as uninstalled on Microsoft update however when added to the updates I want to download and install it's size is 0.

Next symptom. When starting a new e-mail (randomly) the following will happen: Two error messages will come up the first is a a low memory or disk space error (the computer has 768 MB of physical RAM and has a 2GB page file). The second error message says that word is not available at the moment (don't remember the full message).

The above happened once before when opening an attachment. It claimed the computer did not have enough disk space/memory to display the font. By clicking ok the attachment was opened, but a different font was used to display the message.

Some of the trouble shooting I have done and the order it was done in:

Reinstalled Microsoft Office 2003 - No effect (It had been working for months without a problem with 256MB of RAM).

Installed more RAM - (added 512MB now has 768) - This seemed to clear up some of the problem, but it still occurs, just more randomly.

Downloaded/installed Office XP SP3 from Microsoft Update- This allowed me to view a message in the inbox that appeared blank in the past. Shortly after this tried to start a new message and received the error above about not enough disk space/memory and Microsoft word not being available. However by going back to Tools, Options, Mail Format and checking the "Use Word 2003 as your e-mail editor" I was able to start a new e-mail message with word as my e-mailed editor.

Open to ideas. One thought I had while writing this is that the problem might have something to do with actually low disk space which could be affecting the page file. I have not checked to see how much disk space there is on the drive where the page file is located. Though I can't imagine it is low.

Was planning to rebuild the computer mentioned in the earlier post this morning and on a whim did something I should have done in the first place. I checked the system log in event viewer and saw that during a single day the computer was logging 50+ disk errors a day (sometimes one error every minute for 20 minutes at a time) which probably explains why explorer started crashing a lot recently.

I scheduled check disk to do a full scan and try to fix any errors it finds.

The following bad clusters were replaced while chkdsk was running:

I think the above explains why reinstalling Office and adding RAM did not fix the blank messages or the low memory errors when opening attachments with word that contained the Times New Roman font. Also why certain web pages could not be displayed in IE 6.0.
