Levels 1-20 in One Day
My idea of fun is to play a game through from the beginning to the end while doing all the quests and crafting in between. After I’ve completed this task with my first character, I’ll race through the game as fast as possible with my alternate characters. This is my idea of fun and how I get my shits n giggles out of the games I play. This guide will be for those characters who enjoy this sort of game play and who could use some short cuts on their second and third time around. If you haven’t experienced the game to its fullest yet, I suggest you stop reading and do so before you use my shortcuts.

I’ve done this 3 times now, with different primary professions each time. This leveling process doesn’t work with every class but you’ll get to the Crystal Desert so fast you can easily retrain your secondary profession. I know for a fact that this leveling process can be done as an Elementalist (primary or secondary) and a Necromancer (primary or secondary). If you were hoping to role a character as say a Ranger / Mesmer you can apply my strategy to it, though I don’t know first hand how effective it will be. Or, you can initially role as a Ranger / Necro or Elem and just untrain your secondary profession in the Desert the next day.

XP

When looking at the XP you receive from killing a monster and the XP you receive from completing a quest it should be fairly obvious that quests aren’t a very valuable use of your time (in terms of leveling). Though some quests allow you to obtain skills, most quests simply have xp awards. Commonly you see 500 xp quest rewards for a quest that took 15-30 minutes to complete and as you progress deeper into the game that time of completion increases.

Now let’s take a look at xp per kill. If you are level 17 and you walk out into a zone and kill one level 17 monster you will receive 100 xp. How long does it take you to kill 1 monster your level? 30 seconds, 20, 10? So if that monster spawned right outside of an outpost you could warp right back to that outpost, re-enter the zone kill him again and receive another 100 xp. You’ve now earned 200xp for… 2 minutes of work? So that would mean it would take you 5 minutes (most likely less) to earn 500 xp which is the equivalent to a XP quest reward. I guarantee most quests at level 17 take more than 5 minutes for completion. You will also be killing more than 1 monster at a time, sometimes much more.

The much more impressive XP per kill (rather then quest) is the area that we will be focusing on in this guide. If Guild Wars has one unique strength over all other MMORPGS that strength is the ability to template your character’s skills for a specific task. There are so many skills in the game that are extremely specific use that you’ll probably never give them much of a chance in a teamplay situation but when you know the exact role of your character and you can fine-tune your strategy with repetition you can truly allow your character to excel past his pre-determined boundaries.

The Strategy

The features in Guild Wars that makes power leveling possible are instanced zones and town warping. In instanced zones you can always leave and re-enter the zone to reset all the spawns (including quest monster spawns). To make this “resetting of spawns” even easier, Guild Wars allows us to warp to towns by pulling up the map and clicking on an icon.

With that said there are many quests in the game that involve killing multiple monsters and some of these quests take place directly outside of an outpost or town. By using the two features mentioned above you could simply go kill the monsters that were spawned by your active quest, warp to town, re-enter the zone and do it all again. So basically, you are just grinding off the monsters that the mission spawned over and over and over. Repetitious? Yes. Fun and empowering ego boost? Hell Yes.

You can also use this strategy with regular monsters you may find right outside of an outpost. If you walk out of an outpost and see 6 trolls standing next to each other it’s time to get busy. Let’s do the math… 6 trolls your level, 600 XP per set, 1 minute per set? 600 XP per minute, I can live with that. If the trolls are 6 levels higher then you, you’re in heaven… at level 11 a level 17 troll is worth 200 xp, 6 x 200 = 1,200 xp per minute, now that’s definitely worth my time.

These levels noteworthy because of xp but because they are to get your character to the next land mass as soon as possible. The quickest way through these levels is to just do the 4 missions that get you to Yak’s bend. By doing Great Northern Wall, Fort Ranik, Ruins of Surmia and Nolani Academy you are quickening your progression and obtaining decent amounts of xp as you go.

Through this process don’t really worry about your xp bar too much, you’ll be making up for it later on.

10-13

The focus on this level range is not to level you quickly but to progress you through the game through missions. This level range will take you through 5 missions, Borlis Pass, The Frost Gate, Gates of Kryta, D’lessio Seaboard and Divinty Coast. If you’d like to bypass them you can just explore and make it to the next major cities. You can even pay a runner to get you there if you’re Mr. Moneybags.
On a side note you can pay a runner at Beacon’s Pearch to take you to Droknar’s Forge. At Droknar’s Forge you will have access to some of the higher level skills as well as the highest armor rating armor in the game. The armor will increase your margin of error as you grind and increase your XP during the grind. The 2-4k it takes to get your character a trip to Dronknar’s may very well be worth the gold in the long run. You will make your money back during the grind anyway.

13-20

Level 13 is just an estimate of what level you will be when you reach Druid’s Overlook if you’ve gone through all the missions to get there. Right outside Druid’s Overlook is the Sage Lands. From the entrance to the Sage Land if you hug the right wall you’ll eventually enter an area with rock on either side of it. In this area 1-7 Fevered Devourers (lvl 17) will come out of the ground when you approach. Unlike their level 14 counterparts the Fevered Devourer will cast an initial spell then close to melee range for the duration of the battle.

As a Necromancer (w/ high lvl armor and Spiteful Spirit) I could take on 7 lvl 17 Fevered Devourers without much fear of death. At level 11, that’s 1,400 xp per minute with perfect 7 spawn sets. I actually timed my 12-13 grind and it took 12 minutes for the full level. The XP comes fast and you feel a huge ego kick by defeating large quantities of higher level mobs easily and efficiently. You also learn your character’s timing much better and understand the depth of that profession’s skills by their individual uses.

Since I love this part I would often grind to level 20 in Druids Overlook but on my 4th character I only went to 18 then used gained the last 2 levels off necessary missions to get to and through the Crystal Desert.

Will this Strategy Always be Available?

Yes, the strategy will always be available though the grinding spots may change. Many of these grinding spots have been nerfed already by reducing the item drop percentages and even some of the skills that these monsters use. Even the spot in Druid’s Overlook has been nerfed. I used to be able to gain at least 22k from 13-20 by grinding as well as over 50 purple and 25 gold items but on my last character I only received maybe 4 or 5k in gold and 3 or 4 purples with 1 gold.

The important part of this guide isn’t to tell you where to hunt, it’s to give you the perception on how to do and what to look for. As long as you know what to look for you can find new grinding spots on your own.

Furthermore, they will probably never nerf your skills based on your ability to kill multiple mobs efficiently. This game’s balance lies in the PVP not PVE aspect. By nerfing your skills in PVE they’d be drastically changing that skill in PVP and that’s much worse then too many people grinding for xp.

Conclussion

The truth of the matter is level doesn’t really matter. Completion of missions doesn’t really matter either. When a person says “don’t worry, I’ve done this mission before” it doesn’t make him any less of an idiot then the newbie in Ascalon who massages the henchmen in his group to tell them they did really good on that last mission. In a game that allows you to bypass half the content, level your character to the max level in a single day and pay for a runner to take you to the highest level areas of the game there are many shortcuts for competence and the status of a level by your name won’t get you as far as your American Express card will.
