[spo]Release Date: Unknown; that will depend upon when/if filming eventually gets started.

Title Note: (7/30/03) When this project was announced in February, 2003, the title of 'The Elric Saga' was used to apply to the entire trilogy, but no details were given as to what this first movie might be called. I'm going with 'Elric of Melnibone' as that is the title of the first novel, and for the last 30 years, that is generally how fans refer to this series. My hunch is that the actual title when this film is released will probably be something similar to both of these, but different. Since this movie will be based on elements from the first *six* books, there's a lot of title possibilities.

Distributor: Universal Pictures

Production Company: Depth of Field (the production company of Chris and Paul Weitz, directors of About a Boy and American Pie)

Cast: None announced yet.

Cast Notes: (7/30/03) As is often the case with film adaptations of fan favorite properties, there will probably be a great deal of rumors concerning the casting of Elric before anything official is announced. First of all, this interview with author Michael Moorcock reveals that one of the top contenders is Jude Law, who would be an excellent choice. At his official site, Moorcock has also mentioned that his personal favorites are Jack Ryder and Jonathan Rhys-Myers. What all of these actors have in common to varying degrees is something that is integral to a portrayal of Elric: an ability to seem both alien and unique at one moment, and vulnerable and sympathetic at another. In that vein, if you'll indulge my interest in doing some "dream casting" (if Jude Law isn't available), I might suggest Stuart Townsend or Orlando Bloom (although at least one fan at Moorcock's site has cast a "nay" vote for him :).

Director: Not announced yet.

Director Notes: (7/30/03) Chris and Paul Weitz are keeping their participation in this film limited to producing, and have no plans to direct it.

Screenwriter: Not announced yet.

Based Upon: (7/30/03) This movie is based upon the character of Elric of Melnibone, as created by British author Michael Moorcock in a series of novels that started with "Elric of Melnibone" in 1972. The series was originally envisioned as a sextet of books, but in the years since, Moorcock has added five novels to the epic, so that there are now 11 thus far (with more to come). Elric has also been adapted as comic books, graphic novels and role playing games. This movie is being planned as the first of a trilogy, with elements from all six of the original sextet being implemented into this first movie (those first six books sort of skip around in chronology).

Premise: This fantasy epic begins the tale of Elric, the albino ruler of the Kingdom of Melnibone, a decadent and dangerous region made up of a series of islands. Elric's albino condition would normally make him weak and incapable of combat, but he develops a symbiotic relationship with an evil sword named Stormbringer: as long as Elric keeps Stormbringer's blade wet with blood and full of souls it can absorb, the sword transfers some of its energy to Elric, making him a formidable warrior (who can likewise go out and kill more opponents and keep Stormbringer well fed, if you can imagine souls as food). In this first adventure, we see how Elric and Stormbringer begin their strange relationship, and the ramifications it can have on the very kingdom which Elric rules...

Filming: (7/30/03) The rights to this project were only sold a few months ago, and as of now, there is likewise no screenwriter, so this film is years and years away from actually being produced. My hunch as to the earliest filming could possibly start would be sometime in 2005, but 2006 or 2007 are just as likely.
