Question: Does Cracking Your Knuckles Cause Arthritis?
Stop cracking your knuckles! That's a common plea from a parent trying to protect their children's hands, or from someone who's simply annoyed by the noise. Come to think about it, is cracking your knuckles just an irritating habit or is it actually harmful? Can cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?
Answer: Cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis. Understanding what physically occurs when you crack your knuckles will help you realize that the "knuckle cracking causes arthritis" theory is actually just a popular myth.

Arthritis and Cracking Knuckles
The reason people associate knuckle-cracking with arthritis is because it makes a cracking noise and, if something cracks, it must be being damaged. However, the truth is that nothing is being cracked.

There have been a few studies to see whether or not cracking knuckles caused arthritis. None have found that there was an increase of arthritis among knuckle-crackers.

Q: Does cracking my knuckles increase my risk of arthritis?
Answer from Peter Bonafede, M.D., medical director of the Providence Arthritis Center at Providence Portland Medical Center: Likely not. I'm not saying "definitely no" because, while cracking knuckles is common, research on its effects is not. We have only a handful of studies on the subject. None shows a definite link between knuckle cracking and arthritis.

Does the joint cracking cause arthritis?

It's unlikely that joint cracking is a significant cause of arthritis. Joint cracking is usually painless, and so long as it does not cause pain, most doctors agree that you are unlikely to be doing any harm. There are some conditions that can cause a joint cracking that need to be addressed, but these tend to cause symptoms of pain.

Question: Can cracking knuckles / joints lead to arthritis?
Answer: There is no evidence of such an association. In limited studies performed there was no change in occurrence of arthritis between “habitual knuckle crackers” and “non crackers”
